TOP 5 BEST ALBUMS OF 2011!!!

1. FEIST. Metals
A little depression and a big broken heart seem to have inspired Feist's best work this year! Very textured, poetic and intimate, I keep playing this album over and over. Although I do appreciate some of her past work, I wasn't a big fan of Feist prior to "Metals". Well, now I am. Here is her sad rendition of "Bittersweet melodies".
Highlights: "The bad in each other", "Gravyard", "Caught a long wind", "Bittersweet melodies", "Comfort me"...and all the other songs in between. lol

2. RAVEONETTES. Raven in the grave
Very moody, atmospheric, minimal yet intense in emotions and distortion. The music speaks for itself! If you like this album, make sure to look into the band's excellent discography as well.
Highlights: "Recharge & revolt", "War in heaven", "Apparitions" and "Evil seeds".

3. RADIOHEAD. Kind of limbs
Well, I must admit that I am, like many, a very big fan of Radiohead. As usual, this album is quite trippy & very contemporary; full of tricky layers of syncopaded beats, piano and backvocals. For some, it might take a few listening sessions to appreciate the full quality of this album.
It is most impressive to see the band deliver these intricate songs live...!!!
Highlights: "Bloom", "Lotus flower", "Codex" and "Give up the ghost".

4. LYKKE LI. Wounded Rhymes
I'm gonna let Lykke Li talk about her great album herself...on the link below. ;-)
Highlights: "I follow rivers", "Get some", "Rich kids blues" and "Sadness is a blessing"

5. SCRATCH MASSIVE. Nuit de rêve
Think Vive la fête vs Bronski Beat with a darker atmospheric edge. Everyone can notice the strong 80s influence of this electronic DJ duo from Paris, particularly on this album. This is their first coherent album in my point of view. Their sound is more polished and contained in comparison to their more experimental past work.
Highlights: "Pleine lune", "Take me there (feat. Jimmy Somerville)" and "Nuit de mes rêves"

LANA DEL REY. Sensual muse for the sad souls

I'm presently working on my own live interpretation of Lara's upcoming album opening song "Born to die". The full-lenght will be released on Jan.31st and features her (already) classic tracks "Video Games" and "Blue Jeans" (worth looking these songs up if you never heard of the american chanteuse before).
My curiosity about her has led me to find an album she released in 2008 before pulling it out of the shelves recently. Most of the album doesn't at all compare to the quality of her music today, except for a few little treasures; like "Yayo", a sexy love song which reminds me of Marilyn Monroe.

Hard to get an hand on this NALEPA character from L.A....the bio I found reads more like a CV than anything. No idea where his talent for melancholic sexy moods really come from. But I assure you, inspired and inspiring his music is! Trippy too.

Great new video from THE KILLS just came out 2 days ago for "Satellite"!

The song is slowly growing on me, but I'm not super thrilled about it so far. Still, the level of my expectation was very high after their 2 previous excellent albums "No wow" and "Midnight Boom"...which are a "must" in every sexy indie rocker's collection!

Can't wait to hear the full album "Blood pressures" out this April 5th. I do looove the excerpt of the new song in the album teaser though!!! :-P

120 DAYS and their new indie-disco-ride!

Four years after their last release, 120 DAYS is finally back...it seems. No news on their myspace or even official website about a new album on its way, although I've read that half of their new album is ready ( kind of like us! ). But the big news is that a new song has hit ITUNES this week, the instrumental 10-minute indie-disco-trippy ride of "Dale Disco".

I discovered this fantastic band from Norway only last year, although they have been around for a decade already! Most of their music still sounds great today, it's worth looking into it. Mostly because their frontman has a really great voice as well...

Also listen to songs: "Sleepwalking", "Come out, come down, Fade out, Be gone" and "Get away".

You might have seen this video from MGMT as it's been out there for a while now. For myself, I just fell on it today. For some, it might be a pretty ridiculous few minutes, but I find it rather touching and I LOVED the ending. That dried up creature was so adorable too...héhé.

Death is a subject that fascinates me! I've written a song about it on our upcoming album. And although I do believe that what comes after it must be pretty amazing...most of the time, the "transition to it" is scary.

I don't know if it is age or just a saturation from all that empty-soul electro that is blasting everywhere ( can pop music go any lower musically then the new Black Eyed Peas or Britney Spears?! How awful can music get??! Wow. ) but my ears get the most satisfaction out of music like TAMARYN's first album, which came out last fall.

Very hypnotic and dreamy songs again. Simple and pure with a dark touch...of course. Perfect on this white sunday winter afternoon.

#5 BEACHHOUSE. Teen Dream

Who can't enjoy some very easy-listening, poetic, uplifting indie rock with beautiful androgynous vocals ( I was sure that the lead vocalist was a man...oups )?! Perfect contrast with the hardcore speed of 2010.

Great album for relaxing at home with friends or taking it slow on a rainy summer afternoon. No songs to skip, very fluid atmosphere. Here is my favorite track taken from the album:

BEACHHOUSE "Norway"

#4 MASSIVE ATTACK. Heligoland

Fantastic yet apocalyptic lyrics over electro minimalistic orchestrations. Violins and keyboards building-up on dark rhythms...very Massive Attack, very 2010!

Great album with a few magnificent highlights such has "Girl, I love you", "Atlas air" and the sexiest song of 2010, "Paradise Circus" ( in its original version and remixed version which I could listen to forever, and ever, and ever, and ever, and.... ) :

#3 UNKLE. Where did the night fall?

An album filled with incredible vocalists and very haunting songs. Amazing production where analog electronic sounds meet violins and brass. Breathtaking and dramatic at times. These guys are IT!!!

The most underrated, almost unknown, release of 2010 in my point of view. At times "Joy divionesque" and even "Björkish".

#2 ARCADE FIRE. The suburbs

Well, well, well. If I need to introduce you to "Arcade Fire", where have you been?! Every album they release is incredible from beginning to end...and the songs shine even more live! As usual on this new release, more heartfelt political and poetic songs delivered with a driven passion.
Breathtaking talent, inspired songwriting, I like to call them the "Radiohead" of this decade. A must in your collection.
And they are from Montreal = SUPPORT AND BUY!!! :-)

ARCADE FIRE. "Ready to start ( live )"

#1 WILD NOTHING. Gemini

I fell in love with this band when I heard the first few notes of the song "The witching hour". I downloaded the full album right away, before buying the CD as well a few weeks later .Yep, a little obsessive with this band.
Felt almost like discovering "The Cure" or something. A classic and unique sound. An album filled with reverb and moody melancholy. Very haunting and pretty. I actually downloaded their whole discography. Got every single song and I'm liking it all!!!!!!!
Guess I'm crazy for this band. lol

As much as I love all ARCADE FIRE's album ( the new album "The Suburbs" is incredible as always...get it = BUY IT!!! ), the songs really take all their glorious expansion live!

The recent live broadcast on YOUTUBE & VEVO was truly a moment in music history = ARCADE FIRE is THE band of our time; very contemporary lyrics floating on uplifting melodies and an undeniable passion in their delivery. They just can do no wrong and they just proved it one more time.

INTERPOL is back!

INTERPOL is back with a 4th album this September 7th. The track "Lights" was released on the band's website earlier this summer and it is great. Unfortunately, a few days ago I heard the first official single " Barricade" taken from the self-titled upcoming release and it kinda sucks. Definetly, nothing compared to any songs taken from their first album "Turn on the bright lights" which is A MUST for every lover of alternative music! True classic, and it stands the test of time.

Saw them live this week, and their set included lots of excellent songs taken from their first albums...so it was great although they really don't move a lot. The excellence of the music made it a great night nonetheless. Paul Banks vocals we're impeccable, technically and emotionnally.

But none of the new songs seemed really good apart from "Lights". No melody stuck with me...

Ok...the first time I heard this song I kind of liked it...but then I thought it was a bit too "pop" for my DJ sets.
Now, Fuck it!!! It's a great track + extra bonus points too 'cause I was sure it was a boy singing with Robyn before I saw the video! Hot angrogynous thing going on here Coco ( daughter of Sting by the way! ). I like, I like.

This new little hipster trio from London will be launching their first album on June 30th. Fans of MGMT's classic electro-pop ( "Kids", "Time to pretend" ) will probably love this first single which was released last September. I know I do!

A second track called "These new knights" just came out in April...unfortunately it doesn't come close to the hook, freshness and energy of "Dance the way I feel".

.....One hit wonders?

ASCII DISKO's new album: "Stay gold, forever gold"

I use to get a huge kick out of Ascii disko's German-influenced techno rock! And of course, that's why he was selected by us to be one of the great remixers featured on our album "Remix sessions".

Yet, the past 2 years he's been taken a more "minimalistic, softer and repetitive" approach, which got a lot of the fans I know pretty disappointed. On the new album, he's back to something harder and driven....yet, still more repetitive than his early work. I'd say, it's ok. But will not be featured in my DJ sets.
The whole album is instrumental except for the last track ( mellow and moody )...not bad, but nothing great in comparison to his earlier work.

This first video release is pretty moody and nice though!

This new release is probably my favorite track of hers to date ( the sample of SUICIDE's "Ghost rider" definetly helps! ). And the video is a very contemporary short movie vs wake-up call. Just today, SCISSOR SISTERS have posted a new excellent song titled "Invisible light" on their website. This "electro-driven disco summer dream" is actually the closing track of their upcoming album "Night work", coming out on June 28th.

If they can afford to keep such a hot number for last, I have a feeling that many other excellent songs should be featured on this new release. With Stuart Price as the album's producer ( his CV including Zoot woman's first 2 albums, Madonna's "Confessions on a dancefloor", Kylie Minogue, The Killers, etc. ), this will probably be their best work to date!

I'm not into this type of music usually ( "electro-reggeaton" anyone?! ) but this track is definetly one of the rare exceptions. And the video is just soooo crazy!!!!!! I think it will definetly get you smiling...or bouncing naked with a neon on your head!

A song from one of my TOP10 favorite albums of all time was played live for SPIN recently.

Originally sung as a duet with PJ HARVEY, "Eyepennies" is so sad and pretty; I can never get tired of it. If you are not familiar with SPARKLEHORSE, this is a good introduction to his melancholic melodies and black hearted hooks. Enjoy!!!

Fans of "old-school early 80s dark wave" might just faint right now...and those not that familiar with this genre or thrilled by the more obscur side of music will probably enjoy it too!

Nice driven beat, hysterical synths and raw vocals in the style of Faris Badwan, frontman for "The Horrors"! Turn it up real loud and scare your boring neighbors now!!! Haha.

Groove Armada is a name I've heard often, but usually didn't really gave them much of a listen 'cause everytime it was like this: "ah...this is good....aaah no, cheesy electro pop...ok now we get the rap that ruins the song I thought was great so far".

Maybe now I would go back to their older songs and would discover some hidden treasures I walked over back then?...and maybe not.

All I can tell you this week is that their new album "Black light" ( out now ) is definetly worth listening too. I hear influences like New Order, Grace Jones & MGMT...very nice for electro pop!

One of the beauty of sharing my discoveries with you...is that more people are starting to share more hot music with me! YEAH!!! lol

So here we have Crookers, which I've been playing @ my LIPSTICK night for 3-4 weeks now ( the track "We love animals" feat. Soulwax & Mixhell )...but "Transilvania" ( grrrreat title ) is also a hot catch...very electroclash, just like a classic Linda Lamb song.

Album "Tons of friends" out on March 8th.

I discovered The Black Angels in the fall of 2009 and got their 2 albums at the show ( with Raveonettes...hot night! ).

Now, their collaboration with Unkle is just perfect. Surprisingly, it sounds like a Joy Division song to me...who would have expected that!?

Beautiful, dark & haunting.

"LUNGS", my personal favorite release of 2009 ( #3 in my "Best albums of all time"...got myself the "special edition box-set"! ), just won the "Best album" @ the Brit Awards!!! YYYEEAAAHHHH!

A friend of mine started a FACEBOOK PAGE ( add yourself!!! ) trying to bring them back LIVE in Montreal this coming April, as they will be touring Toronto and the States...but unfortunately not revisiting us so far.

Saw her last November and...W-O-W!!! Incredible voice and performance! Mind-blooooowing.

Good...I have to admit that I've been abusing of MGMT's first album "Oracular Spectacular - ☆☆☆☆" in my DJ sets!!! Not convinced that some of their new tracks will be "dancefloor friendly" enough as they have described this upcoming release as "weird...almost like a soul album". But still, pretty sure it's gonna be something nice to listen to!

...sounds promising!!! Great first single and rarely disapointed with them, I must say. Dirty, driven, hypnotic and oh so sexy pure rock n'roll...and I also love the album's title: "BEAT THE DEVIL'S TATTOO"!

Release date: March 9th 2010.

Never seen them live but won't miss them this time around. I have a feeling it's worth every penny. I highly suggest you catch them in your city!

Their last and best release "Seventh tree - ☆☆☆☆1/2" is worth a few attempts if you didn't love it the first time around. But I guess it didn't sell that much copies and they needed to eat badly!

Heard another track "Believer" taken from their upcoming album "Head first" ( couldn't have found a more appropriate title! ) as well, and it is no better at all.

So let's listen to our classic Olivia instead! Yeah!!!
